The 2020 YONEX Canadian National Badminton Championships are coming to Winnipeg

From January 29th to February 1st, 2020, Badminton Canada will be hosting the 2020 YONEX Canadian National Badminton Championships at the Prairie Badminton Club in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

For the first time in history, Badminton Canada will be hosting the National Championships for both able-bodied and para-badminton at the same time, and in the same venue.

“Badminton Canada has made inclusivity a priority; combining these events into one Championship was a crucial and necessary step for the organization” said Joe Morissette, Executive Director of Badminton Canada. “We welcome badminton enthusiasts of all abilities to come watch and experience the fastest racquet sport in the world!”

On display at the 2020 YONEX Canadian National Badminton Championships will be Canada’s best badminton athletes, including the youngest National Champion in history, Brian Yang. Yang is currently 2nd on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Ranking, and fresh off an incredible season – winning a Bronze medal at the Pan American Games this summer at the age of 17.

Joining, Yang will be fellow YONEX National Team athletes, including Women’s Doubles pair Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai; Men’s Doubles pair Jason Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura; and Mixed Doubles pair Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Josephine Wu – all of whom are defending National Champions and 2019 Pan Am Games Champions.

“We have our best athletes attending the Championships this year, it is sure to be a great competition with tons of great performances and energy” said Mike Butler, National Team Head Coach. “With para-badminton debuting in the 2020 Paralympic Games this summer in Tokyo, athletes and spectators will get a taste of the amazing things these para-athletes can do!”

An athlete to watch in the para-badminton events is young Winnipeg local, Olivia Meier. Meier trains out of the Winnipeg Winter Club (WWC), and has been a top performer for Canada since she began competing in para-badminton in 2016. This past summer, Meier claimed her first Parapan Am Games title in Mixed Doubles (SL3/SU5) alongside partner, Pascal Lapointe, and was also able to claim a silver medal with an outstanding performance in Women’s Singles (SL3/SU5). Now, like many of our Canadian badminton athletes, Meier looks to capture a National Championship title, however this time, she has the potential to do it in her hometown!

Schedule of Play: • Wednesday January 29th & Thursday January 30th 2020 – Main Round Matches – All Day • Friday January 31st – Semi-Finals begin a 5:00PM MST • Saturday February 1 st – Finals being at 12:00PM MST – Medals & Awards at 5:00PM MST

Mike Soroka wins Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Tip O’Neill Award

St. Marys, Ont. – Calgary native Mike Soroka has been named the winner of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s 2019 Tip O’Neill Award.

Canada’s baseball shrine presents this honour annually to the Canadian player judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team contribution while adhering to baseball’s highest ideals.

Soroka, who finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting and sixth in the Cy Young Award voting, is a first-time winner of the award. He staved off strong competition from last year’s winner James Paxton (Ladner, B.C.) to secure the honour.

“Mike Soroka put together one of the best rookie seasons by a Canadian pitcher in major league history,” said Scott Crawford, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s director of operations. “He not only had an outstanding regular season with the Atlanta Braves, but he was also dominant in his first post-season start. He’s definitely a worthy recipient of the award.”

In his first full major league season, Soroka posted a 13-4 record and a 2.68 ERA, while striking out 142 batters in 174-2/3 innings in 29 starts for the Braves. His ERA ranked third in the National League, while his road ERA (1.35) was the best in the circuit and the fifth lowest in major leagues since 1913 (minimum 15 games started).

Among National League rookie hurlers, Soroka had the best ERA, was third in wins and fourth in games started, innings pitched and strikeouts. For his efforts, he was named to the National League All-Star team and a starting pitcher on Baseball America’s MLB All-Rookie team.

The Canuck right-hander was also masterful in his first post-season start, limiting the St. Louis Cardinals to one run on two hits, while striking out seven, in seven innings in Game 3 of the National League Division Series.

Selected in the first round of the 2015 MLB draft, the PBF Redbirds and Junior National Team alum made his big league debut on May 1, 2018. In five starts for the Braves last season, he registered a 2-1 record and a 3.51 ERA.

On top of his strong on-the-field performance in 2019 , Soroka has also been active in charitable and community endeavors. He worked with a number of charities that the Braves Foundation supports, including the Dave Krache Foundation and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He also worked with CHOA’s epilepsy unit during the season to host a number of children and their parents at a game. Back in his home province, he serves as an ambassador for KidSport Calgary.

“When I had been told I would be the recipient of the 2019 Tip O’Neill Award, it really did put me back in a sense of awe,” said Soroka. “Having had the opportunity to grow up through the Canadian Baseball Program (Junior National Team), I have always felt a sense of pride when there are Canadians excelling in this game. I am always sure to mention to anyone watching other games in the clubhouse when a Canadian is at the plate or on the mound. I am beyond humbled to have the honour of sharing this award with some of the greats of not just Canadian baseball, but Major League Baseball period. This sense of pride has stemmed from others who represented Canadian baseball so well before me, and is something I hope to carry on as well.

“I am extremely thankful to have been considered for the Tip O’Neill, as it will be something I carry with great pride.”

Details about the presentation of the 2019 Tip O’Neill Award will be announced in the coming months.

The Hall’s Tip O’Neill Award is named after Woodstock, Ont., native James “Tip” O’Neill, who was one of Major League Baseball’s first legitimate stars. With the American Association’s St. Louis Browns in 1887, O’Neill set big league records in hits, doubles, slugging percentage and total bases, while compiling a major league record .492 batting average. Walks were counted as hits in 1887, but if O’Neill’s average was calculated by today’s standards, it would be .435, the second-highest in big league history to Hugh Duffy who hit .440 in 1894.

To determine the winner of the Tip O’Neill Award, the Hall takes into account a number of criteria, including each candidate’s on-the-field performance, contributions to their team, community and charitable endeavors and support in fan voting. Starting on November 15, the Hall had encouraged fans to vote for their top three candidates and they responded by casting their votes via e-mail and on the Hall’s website.

BLADES’ WOUTERS & OIL KINGS’ WILLIAMS ADDED TO TEAM WHL FOR 2019 CIBC CANADA RUSSIA SERIES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2019 Calgary, Alta. –

The Western Hockey League, in association with the Canadian Hockey League and Hockey Canada, announced today that Saskatoon Blades captain Chase Wouters and Edmonton Oil Kings forward Josh Williams have been added to Team WHL’s roster for the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series.

Wouters currently sits second in scoring with the Blades this season, posting 17 points (10G-7A) in 18 games. For his WHL career, the 6-foot-0, 185-pound product of Lloydminster, Alta. has 128 points (49G-79A) in 214 WHL regular season games. In 2018, Wouters was named the WHL Eastern Conference Scholastic Player of the Year. Internationally, the 19-year-old Wouters earned silver with Canada Black at the 2016 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and represented Canada at the 2018 IIHF Under-18 World Championship. The Blades chose Wouters with the 19th-overall selection in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft.

Williams ranks second in team scoring this season with 19 points (8G-11A) for the league-leading Oil Kings. Over his WHL career, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound product of Langley, B.C. has 73 points (34G-39A) in 133 WHL regular season games with the Oil Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers. Internationally, the 18-year-old won gold with Canada at the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Williams was originally chosen fifth overall at the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

In addition, the WHL announced that forwards Kirby Dach of the Saskatoon Blades and Peyton Krebs of the Winnipeg ICE will not participate at the event.

The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series will represent the event’s return to both Saskatoon and Prince Albert. In 2005 and 2014, the event made an appearance in Saskatoon, while Prince Albert played host in 2008.

The six-game CIBC Canada Russia Series features regional league teams of Canadian National Junior Team candidates competing against the Russian National Junior Team. Team CHL has won 12 times in event history, with Russia emerging victorious on four occasions.

The 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series is supported by title sponsor CIBC, the Official Bank of the CHL, along with associate sponsors Kia Canada, Cooper Tires, and Kubota Canada. All games will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.
