WINNIPEG – According to the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS), sport and physical activity build community and belonging, but those who can most benefit from inclusion are often not well-understood or supported to participate. Newcomer youth to Canada often face a number of challenges, including but not limited to exclusion, poverty and separation. Research shows that newcomer girls and women are the most underrepresented population in the Canadian sport and physical activity system.
Allison Gervais and Andrea Katz from Fit Communications, with support from Playing 4 A Purpose Foundation, are doing something about this. Gervais and Katz have organized a three-part series for newcomer girls in Winnipeg to showcase a variety of sports and help demonstrate what the sport community for girls is all about.
“We are on a mission to increase sport and activity participation for girls in Canada. We want to ensure girls of all ages and backgrounds are included in this mission, and want to give both the parents and girls access to resources and activities in our great city. This event is a starting point for this,” says Katz.
All three session are completely free for the girls who are attending. The aim is to include 20 girls ages 8 – 15 for these sport sessions. The sports included are Artistic Swimming (formerly Synchronized Swimming), Kickboxing, Yoga, Hip Hop Dance, and Jazz Dance. Regardless of their origin, the aim is to show these young girls that sport is a fun way to enjoy the summer in Winnipeg, meet new friends, and find a sense of community.
The sport days will take place July 10, 31 and August 14 at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex. Registration is mandatory. For girls interested in registering, please contact Fit Communications at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are a limited number of spots for the events and will be filled on a first come, first serve basis.
